Mary had seen that symbol on those who displeased the Dark Templar and managed to escape. A circle with flames and lightning burnt deep into his flesh, but there was a larger circle of blue tattooed into his skin that appeared to be swirling water. The tattoo did nothing to hide or mask the scar.
She stood and moved to him, reaching toward the tattoo. Druid wards. Probably containing some dark spell. âYou escaped and sought one of the ward masters to protect yourself, didnât you?â
âTo protect you. I had to come for you, but Lyle was there.â Harrison pulled the shirt on and stepped onto the balcony.
âI wish you had come to me. You didnât, and I thought that meant you were using me from the start. That the bond was false. But the wards dampen the connection so I canât find you, I can just sense you near.â
âAlso blocks the bond Azhuran burned into me with that damned brand. First, I needed to escape. Then I needed to find a druid willing to block that magic. It took time, Mary. Every day that passed was another day you could fall for Lyle. Someone who didnât have to lie to you or keep secrets. The truth is hard. I didnât want to know the truth of my own damned past.â
âI donât give a damn about the past. But every detail could have helped me to figure out how to stop what was coming. If I knew Azealia was the one who sent you, I would have been better prepared.â
He nodded. âYouâre right, and I was wrong. I canât change any of that.â
Mary moved to Harrison and Jay disappeared into another room, probably realizing they needed some time.
Guilt weighed heavy on her soul. âHarrison, look at me.â
âWhy? It doesnât change how deeply I hurt you, how wrong I was, or ease any of the pain I feel.â
âPlease.â
He turned, lifting his gaze to hers.
The agony staring back threatened to drown her in regret. âI should have sought you out when you came back, but I couldnât find you. I tried a couple of times, and you were never there. I could sense you through the bond, but not where you were. I was so sure that meant you had found a way to break our bond, or it was fake to begin with.â
âIt was never fake.â He closed his eyes, shutting her out.
Taking his face in both hands, she brought his head down to kiss his brow. âIâm sorry. More than youâll ever know. I gave up when I shouldnât have. Elen was right. I should have trusted you, no matter how hard things were.â
âYou were always too good for me, Mary. I never deserved you.â
Shaking her head, she blinked back tears. âDonât. Iâm the one who wasnât good enough for you. I turned my back on you when you went through hell.â
He tried to turn away.
Mary caressed his jaw, trying to get through to him.
He held on to her wrists.
